For the final month of our sketch group (that required one drawing per day for a year),
I decided to conclude with something grand and ambitious,
another attempt at illustration. It being the month of February, it seemed a propos to tackle
one of my favorite pieces of music, one which I've never tired of since I heard it fifteen years
ago: Franz Schubert's song cycle Winterreise [the Winter Journey.] Twenty-four songs total, I made one
illustration per song, limiting myself to cut black and white paper.
Click on the portrait of Franz to view the complete set of illustrations.
I strongly recommend getting a copy of the music, specifically the 1972 recording made
by Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Gerald Moore.
Forget John Lennon. Franz Schubert is the greatest songwriter that ever lived.
